Gandhi Memorial Debate Competition

About the Competition

What is it?

Since its conception in 2015, the Gandhi Memorial Debate Competition has made great strides in fulfilling its objectives of inspiring critical and constructive thinking among the younger generation and championing the real-world applicability of Gandhian principles in today’s society.

In line with the relevance of Gandhian principles in world affairs, the Gandhi Memorial Trust aspires to hold this debate annually on the contentious issues which threaten the security and stability of civil society. We believe that the younger generation is a major stakeholder in this exercise, and that their voices must be heard.

In 2015, law students from across Malaysia were pitted against issues centering on the Gandhian principles of Ahimsa (Non-Violence) and Satyagraha (Truth). Topics challenged the young legal minds on issues concerning the adversarial system of justice adopted in Malaysian courts (and most common law/commonwealth countries); the impact of British colonialization on its colonies socially, politically and economically; and the nuclear solution for sustaining world peace.

This time around, our competition has gotten even bigger—we have opened our doors to participants from all across ASEAN and this will be the competition’s first ever regional inter-varsity event!

Globally significant issues. ASEAN-centred.

While the Gandhi Memorial Debate Competition pits its participants against issues that have a significant global impact, our focus for the year 2018 is ASEAN and the ASEAN Economic Community.

One team from each ASEAN country is allowed to represent their region and showcase their skills in our 2018 competition. Each team is made up of 3 participants and one student advisor. This competition is open to undergraduates of law, economics, finance or related disciplines in selected institutions and participation is on an invitational-basis only

When and where will it be held?

The competition will be held on 1 and 2 October 2018 in the heart of Malaysia’s capital city, Kuala Lumpur. The Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration(KLRCA) will provide the venue for the duration of the competition.

What’s in it for me?

Besides the opportunity to help us make history and be part of an exclusive lineup of institutions to take part in the Gandhi Memorial Debate’s first ever inter-regional competition, champions and runner-ups will also have the chance to compete for the opportunity to intern with our supporting organisation, ZICO Holdings. Additionally, champions will compete for the chance to take home our highly-coveted Gandhi Memorial Debate Trophy!
