Tan Sri G K Rama Iyer

 

Tan Sri G.K. Rama Iyer was born on 13 March 1932. He received his Secondary education at Penang Free School, and has since obtained a B.A. Hons (Econs) at the University of Malaya, a M.P.A. from Harvard University, U.S.A. and an A.M.P. (Advance Management Programme) from the Harvard Business School at Harvard University, U.S.A.

Tan Sri G.K. Rama Iyer joined the Malayan Civil Service in 1955 and served in various positions till 1985. Positions held included Secretary General at the Ministry of Planning & Socio-Economic Research, Secretary General of the Ministry of Works and Public Utilities; and Secretary General of the Ministry of Primary Industries. Among other things Tan Sri helped with the setting up of the first national shipping line - MISC and served as a Director on its board till April 1994. He was also the first Chairman of Malaysian Airlines System and in 1985 he was appointed Managing Director of Maika Holdings Berhad. In 1991 he was appointed Director of Bumiputra-Commerce Bank Berhad and Bumiputra-Commerce Bank (L) Ltd, which are positions, Tan Sri holds today.

Tan Sri G.K. Rama Iyer has been the Chairman of Malaysian Highway Authority (1980-84), Palm Oil Registration and Licensing Authority (1981-85), Malaysia Timber Industry Board (1981-85), Global Maritime Ventures (M) Sdn. Bhd. (Nov 94-May 96) and the Malaysian Forest Research and Development Board (1991-2001).

He is a member of the Malaysian Institute of Economic Research Advisory Council, Director of the Maritime Institute of Malaysia and Director of the Yayasan Tun Razak Harta Sdn. Bhd. He serves as a Trustee with the Yayasan Tun Razak, Malaysian Nature Society and Gandhi Memorial Trust and is a committee member of the Spastics Children Association of Selangor & WP.

Tan Sri G.K. Rama Iyer has been awarded with the following Honours and Decorations; Kesatria Mangku Negara (KMN) in 1963, Johan Mangku Negara (JMN) in 1974 and Panglima Setia Mahkota (PSM) in 1979.

Tan Sri G.K. Rama Iyer is married to Puan Sri Vijayalakshmi Rama Iyer.
