Tan Sri Dato' Dr. Abu Bakar Suleiman


Tan Sri Dato' Dr Abu Bakar Suleiman, was appointed President of the IMU on 1 March 2001. He has had a distinguished career in the Malaysian Health Service rising to the level of Director General of the Ministry of Health. He served the government in this capacity for nine years (November 1991 - February 2001). 

Tan Sri Dato' Dr Abu Bakar attended Geelong Grammar School in Victoria, Australia. In 1968 he received his medical degree (MBBS) from Monash University, Australia. He completed his postgraduate training in Nephrology 1974 and was awarded MRACP by the Royal Australian College of Physicians. He also became a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians (FRACP).

Tan Sri Dato' Dr Abu Bakar joined the government service as a medical officer in 1969 and worked as a medical officer for four years in Johor. Upon successful completion of his postgraduate training he was appointed Consultant Physician in the Department of Nephrology at the Hospital Kuala Lumpur. After a seven month stint as Visiting Fellow in the Division of Nephrology, University Hospital, Washington DC (USA) and another seven months at the Department of Nephrology, Prince Henry's Hospital, Melbourne (Australia) Tan Sri Dato' Dr Abu Bakar assumed the position as Consultant Nephrologist & Head, Department of Nephrology, Hospital Kuala Lumpur (1976 - 87). In April 1987 he was appointed Director of Medical Services, Ministry of Health. Two years later he was promoted to Deputy Director General of Health. He remained in this capacity until November 1991 when he was promoted to Director General of Health. 

The recipient of several honours and honorary awards, Tan Sri Dato' Dr Abu Bakar has over 40 publications and numerous proceedings to his credit and has contributed to the textbook "Tropical Nephrology". One of the highlights of his career as the Director General of Health has been the planning and development of the Telehealth Application Flagship of the government's Multimedia Super Corridor. He sits on a number of advisory boards in the national and international health movement.
